New Flickr Uploadr 3.2.1

There is a new update for Flickr - version 3.2.1. I used to use this software to upload batches of photos but it always fail. What I can do before this was to upload photos with a smaller batch, batch-by-batch and not dare to touch the software while the photos are uploading.

Hopefully, the new release fixed the problems I and most people are facing. Here is the release notes of the new release:

Uploadr 3.2.1 Release Notes - Implemented with new XULrunner 1.9.1 beta to fix crash issues - Fixed file sorting/order problems: synchronized order of files before, during and after upload - Fixed bug that caused Uploadr to stall while resizing - Fixed bug that caused Uploadr to stall while using arrow keys on keyboard - Prevented multiple error prompts that stalled Uploadr - Enabled "photo by photo" upload progress as default - Fixed bug that limited batch operations - Increased Unicode characters support - Enabled cancel option while resizing images - Reduced "sort by date taken" linkable area to improve usability - Updated messaging regarding video sizes and number of videos - Fixed bug that caused Uploadr to add failed photos multiple times - Improved Uploadr's ability to retrieve sets - Lengthened Uploadr time-out sequence to prevent files from being uploaded multiple times.

I haven't tried the new software but I will try it whenever I have photos to upload.

Upgrade to WordPress Version 2.8

WordPress is now version 2.8 and available for public to download. I have upgraded all my blogs to WordPress Version 2.8 without any problem. Thanks to the WordPress automatic upgrade feature in version 2.7.

Received My Free Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition CD

Got my free Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition CD in my mail box just now. I made the free CD request 4 weeks ago and finally they delivered the CD to my house today.

For those who does not know Ubuntu, "Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.".

Ubuntu can be downloaded for free at Ubuntu website. You can even ask them to deliver the Ubuntu CD to you for free. The operating system is free, the CD is free and the shipment is free too! How nice. Please note that the delivery may take up to ten weeks, so be patient to wait for the free CD.

Beware of Phishing Site Links from Windows Live Messenger

Recently I received a lot of phishing links from my Windows Live Messenger buddies. And most of the links redirect me to MSN phishing sites and some of them redirect me to download software and screen saver (which may contain virus).

Please beware the links that sent from your friends in Windows Live Messenger. The messages itself may not sent by your friend's intension. Before you open any link, ask your friends if the links are sent by them. If not, their PC might have infected by virus or spyware.

Uninstalling IE8

Do you use Internet Explorer with Maybank2u's online stock? I'm having problem to load all the drop down menus in IE8 when I'm in Maybank2u's online stock home page, thus I can't see my stock profiles, transaction histories and etc. I guess it is a bugs in IE8 because even using the "Compatible View" feature in IE8 does not help.

Uninstalling IE8 is not as straight forward as unstalling standard program as it is installed as a Windows Update. If you facing the same problem and thinking to uninstall IE8, you can refer to "How to uninstall IE8 in Windows Vista".

A WordPress Plugin for Blogtal

Finally have some free time to do something for my websites. I have just wrote a WordPress plugin for Blogtal. It is a plugin to send trackback of a newly published post in WordPress to www.blogtal.com. I called the plugin "Blogtal Trackback".

Unlike the older version of my plugin, Default Trackback, Blogtal Trackback will not send trackback to Blogtal when you are saving a published post. You also can configure the trackback settings inside WordPress' admin page.

For those who has registered with Blogtal, using WordPress as their blog platform and still using manual trackback at www.blogtal.com or not sending trackback at all, you can try installing this plugin.

Flickr Uploadr Problems

Being used Flickr Uploadr a few times after I have purchased the Flickr Pro account, I faced a lot of problems.

Below are some of the problems I was facing:

You can not upload too much photo at once. Although you can select from the Windows' Open Dialog but the selected photos does not appear in the Flickr Uploadr window. However, you still can use the drag and drop method to pull all the image from your drive to Flickr Uploadr window.
Inconsistence behavior of the program when you close the program with full of images. Sometimes you get nothing when you reopen the window, sometimes you get some broken links, sometime the predefined setting (e.g. set and description) disappear, ... and etc.
Although the program allows you to upload multiple batch of images but most of the time it fails.
When uploading a large batch of images, the network connection may broken. Although it allow you to retry but again most of the time it fails.

My solution or advice to the above problems is to upload one batch at a time, close the program and reopen the program for another upload, do not touch your PC while it is uploading.

I was thinking to buy an online photo album storage to store all my photo albums. From my previous trip to UK, I have already taken around 6GB of photos! So I do need a larger space for my photos and it's price must be affordable. I have reviewed and compared two online photos storage provider: Flickr from Yahoo and Picasa Web Albums from Google.

Below are the pricing plans for both Flickr and Picasa Web Albums:

- 10 GB ($20.00 USD per year)
- 40 GB ($75.00 USD per year)

- 400 GB ($500.00 USD per year)

I'm not worrying the reliability of the storage and features provided by both companies because they are giant companies with very good reputation.

With the photos I have right now, I think the Flickr's plan is much more worthy. I can easily hit 10GB limit offered by Google and if so, I will require to pay $75.00 USD per year or maybe more! With Flickr's plan, the money I need to pay is not affected by the amount of photo that I have.

Without thinking too much, I have bought the Flickr plan for 2 years :)

I have took some times and affords to find the pricing plan for both provider. So I put the links in this post just in case someone need it.

Gmail Manager

After I had installed Firefox 1.5 on my notebook, I went to Mozilla Extensions to look for some plug-ins. I found this: Gmail Manager. Previously I was using Gtalk as my Gmail Notifier but sometimes I found it was a bit 'heavy' (drained some resources) to run on my notebook. Gmail Manager is more light-weight. Since I didn't use Gtalk as the messenger so it is OK for me to use Gmail Manager.

I installed Adsense Notifier 0.7 for Firefox too but it seems to have conflict with Gmail Manager. Most of the time, the stats doesn't show up. The programmer of Gmail Manager or Adsense Notifier might take note on this.

Today, when I open my Firefox 1.5, the Adsense Notifier pops up and complaint I have entered incorrect password. I guess something has changed in google's login prosedure.

Then I try to update extension from my Firefox, there is an avaible update for Adsense Notifier - version 0.7.
Here are some of the changes to the new version of Adsense Notifier:

Fixed issue where multiple Options windows could flood user if password is missing or incorrect.
Fixed issue where any report but “today�? was not showing properly upon initially loading Firefox.
Updated Google logon procedure. Thank you again to the Google AdSense support team for the heads up.
